🌺 Thanksgiving Cactus

Schlumbergera truncata

Plant Care Guide

☀️ Light

Bright indirect light year-round. North- or east-facing window ideal. No harsh direct sun — stems yellow or pale. Tolerates limited direct sun in midwinter only. Grow light or fluorescent light works well.

💧 Water

  • Allow top 2–3 cm to dry between waterings
  • Soak thoroughly, drain fully
  • Keep evenly moist during flowering (autumn/winter)
  • Reduce in spring after blooms drop
  • Never let sit in water — root rot is the most common cause of death
  • Sensitive to tap water minerals — filtered or rainwater preferred

🪴 Soil

  • Well-draining but moisture-retentive (not as sandy as desert cactus mixes)
  • Good potting mix + perlite + fine bark or orchid mix
  • Slightly acidic pH (5.5–6.5)
  • Prefers a slightly snug pot — overpotting discourages blooming
  • Always use a pot with drainage holes

🌡️ Temperature

  • Growing season (April–September): 18–27 °C
  • Bud-set trigger (mid-September onwards): 15–18 °C days / 7–13 °C nights
  • During flowering: 21–24 °C days / 16–21 °C nights
  • Above 32 °C causes bud drop
  • Minimum: 7 °C — do not expose to frost
  • Avoid cold drafts, sudden swings, and heat vents

💦 Humidity

  • 50–60% preferred; tolerates average indoor levels
  • Pebble tray or humidifier helpful in dry winter heating season
  • Good air circulation reduces fungal risk

🌱 Feeding

  • Every 2–4 weeks spring/summer at half strength
  • Balanced liquid fertilizer
  • Stop after blooms drop; resume in spring with new growth
  • Flush soil occasionally to prevent salt buildup
  • Light feeder — less is more

🌸 Blooming

  • Blooms late October–December; colours: red, pink, orange, peach, white, purple
  • Requires 13+ continuous hours of darkness per night to set buds
  • Begin dark treatment from mid-September for 8 weeks
  • Even brief light interruption during dark period disrupts bud set
  • Cool nights are equally important — bud drop if temps too warm
  • Do not move the plant once buds have set
  • Can re-bloom in February with correct cool/dark conditions

🌿 Facts

  • Not a true cactus — an epiphyte that naturally grows on trees and rocks
  • Stem segments have pointed claw-like serrations (vs. rounded on Christmas cactus)
  • Yellow anthers distinguish it from Christmas cactus (which has purple-brown anthers)
  • Grows 25–30 cm tall, up to 60 cm wide — cascading habit, ideal for hanging baskets
  • Can live for decades; some plants are passed between generations
  • Attracts hummingbirds in its natural habitat

🐛 Pests

  • Generally pest-resistant
  • Watch for mealybugs, fungus gnats, spider mites
  • Overwatered soil attracts fungus gnats — let soil dry more between waterings
  • Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap

✂️ Care Tips

  • Prune in spring by twisting off 1–2 segments per stem to encourage branching
  • More stem tips = more blooms
  • Propagate cuttings in moist perlite — very easy
  • Repot every 2 years in spring; go only 1 pot size up; avoid repotting in autumn
  • Move outdoors in summer to a shaded, sheltered spot (above 10 °C nights) — boosts growth and autumn bud set

✅ Safety

Non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans — safe for pet owners.
