🐘 Elephant Ear (Alocasia)

Alocasia macrorrhiza

Plant Care Guide

β˜€οΈ Light

Bright indirect light only β€” leaves scorch easily in direct sun. East-facing window ideal; morning direct sun generally tolerated. Not a true low-light plant β€” insufficient light causes leggy growth and leaf loss. Rotate ΒΌ turn every few weeks for even growth. Grow light works well, especially in winter.

πŸ’§ Water

  • Allow top 2–3 cm of soil to dry before watering
  • Soak thoroughly, drain fully
  • Never let sit in water β€” root rot risk is very high
  • Reduce significantly in autumn/winter during rest period
  • Do not let fully dry out even in winter
  • Use filtered or room-temperature water (sensitive to chlorine and minerals)
  • Yellow leaves = overwatering; drooping = too much or too little water

πŸͺ΄ Soil

  • Rich, coarse, well-draining aroid mix: perlite + orchid bark + quality potting soil
  • Slightly acidic pH (5.5–7.0)
  • Roots need oxygen β€” never use dense or compact soil
  • Always use a pot with drainage holes; slightly snug pot preferred
  • Terracotta pots help prevent overwatering

🌑️ Temperature

  • Ideal: 18–29 Β°C
  • Minimum: 15 Β°C β€” stress begins below this, cold damage below 10 Β°C
  • Do not expose to frost
  • Avoid cold drafts, A/C vents, and open windows in winter
  • Consistent warmth is key

πŸ’¦ Humidity

  • 50–70% essential
  • Use a humidifier as first choice
  • Pebble tray or grouping with other plants also helps
  • Misting alone is not sufficient and can cause fungal issues
  • Low humidity = leading cause of spider mite infestations
  • Brown tips = air too dry

🌱 Feeding

  • Every 2–4 weeks spring/summer only
  • High-nitrogen liquid fertilizer at half strength
  • Feed only when actively producing new growth
  • Stop in autumn/winter during rest period
  • Flush soil periodically to prevent salt buildup; always water before fertilising

🌿 Facts

  • Leaves always point upward (unlike Colocasia, which droops downward)
  • Grows from rhizomes/tubers β€” stores energy to recover even after losing all leaves
  • Goes semi-dormant in winter β€” leaf drop is normal, plant is not dead
  • Rarely blooms indoors; related to Monstera, Peace Lily, and Philodendron
  • Wipe large leaves regularly β€” dust reduces photosynthesis and hides pests
  • Also known as African Mask Plant or Kris Plant depending on species

πŸ› Pests

  • Spider mites are the #1 threat, especially in dry winter air
  • Also: mealybugs, aphids, scale, fungus gnats
  • Inspect leaf undersides regularly
  • Rinse with soapy water, then treat with neem oil
  • Increase humidity after treatment; quarantine all new plants

βœ‚οΈ Care Tips

  • Propagate by dividing offsets or separating rhizomes in spring
  • Repot every 1–2 years in spring; go only 1–2 cm larger; fresh soil rejuvenates growth
  • If all leaves drop in winter β€” keep soil barely moist and wait for spring regrowth
  • Struggling plant? Enclose in a clear plastic bag to create a humidity tent
  • Prune yellow or damaged leaves at the base with clean, sharp scissors β€” wear gloves
  • Not suitable for outdoor use in frost-prone climates

⚠️ Warning

Toxic to cats, dogs, and humans. Calcium oxalate crystals cause oral and throat irritation if ingested.
