⚫ Black Velvet Alocasia

Alocasia reginula

Plant Care Guide

☀️ Light

Bright indirect light only — never direct sun. North- or east-facing window ideal. Direct sun scorches the velvety leaves easily. Grow light works well; low light causes leggy, slow growth. Rotate ¼ turn every few weeks.

💧 Water

  • Allow top 2–3 cm of soil to dry before watering
  • Soak thoroughly, drain fully
  • Never let sit in water — root rot risk is very high
  • Reduce significantly in autumn/winter during dormancy
  • Use filtered or room-temperature water (sensitive to chlorine and minerals)
  • Yellow leaves = overwatering; drooping = too much or too little water

🪴 Soil

  • Coarse, aerated aroid mix: perlite + orchid bark + quality potting soil
  • Slightly acidic pH (5.5–6.5)
  • Roots need oxygen — never use dense or compact soil
  • Slightly snug pot preferred — do not overpot
  • Always use a pot with drainage holes

🌡️ Temperature

  • Ideal: 18–27 °C
  • Minimum: 15 °C — growth stops and stress begins below this
  • Do not expose to frost
  • Avoid cold drafts, A/C vents, and open windows in winter
  • No sudden temperature changes

💦 Humidity

  • 60–75% essential — this is non-negotiable
  • Average household air is too dry; use a humidifier as first choice
  • Pebble tray or grouping with other plants also helps
  • Misting alone is insufficient and can cause fungal issues
  • Low humidity = increased spider mite risk
  • Brown tips = air too dry

🌱 Feeding

  • Every 4–6 weeks spring/summer only
  • Balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength — light feeder
  • Stop in autumn/winter during dormancy
  • Flush soil occasionally to prevent salt buildup
  • Always water before fertilising

🌿 Facts

  • Name means 'Little Queen' in Latin
  • Leaf undersides have violet/magenta tones
  • Grows 3–6 new leaves per season under ideal conditions
  • Goes semi-dormant in winter — leaf drop is normal, rhizome stays alive
  • Compact size makes it suitable for terrariums
  • Considered a collector's plant in the jewel Alocasia category

🐛 Pests

  • Spider mites are the #1 threat, especially in dry winter air
  • Also: aphids, mealybugs, scale
  • Inspect leaf undersides regularly
  • Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap
  • High humidity is the best defence against spider mites
  • Quarantine all new plants before adding to your collection

✂️ Care Tips

  • Propagate by dividing offsets or rhizome sections at repotting in spring
  • Repot every 1–2 years; go only 1 pot size up; fresh soil rejuvenates growth
  • Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth — do not use leaf shine products
  • Struggling plant? Enclose in a clear plastic bag as a humidity tent
  • Prune yellow or damaged leaves at the base with clean scissors
  • Not suitable for outdoor use

⚠️ Warning

Toxic to cats, dogs, and humans. Calcium oxalate crystals cause oral and throat irritation if ingested.
